Welcome to Coping Skills for Kids

Welcome Boston Globe visitors - I’m so glad you’re here!

Here is a little bit more information about me and my company, Coping Skills for Kids.

About JANINE

Janine Halloran is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a mom of 2. She has been helping children and teens build their coping skills throughout her career in a variety of settings, including schools, mental health clinics and in her private practice. She is the author of several books, including the bestselling Coping Skills for Kids Workbook and the Coping Skills for Teens Workbook. Her work has been featured in the Boston Globe, CNN, Huffington Post, Psych Central, and The Skimm® Newsletter.

As a counselor working primarily with children and adolescents for the last 20 years, Janine has seen the value of learning healthy coping skills early in life. Children who can cope in healthy ways will be more resilient and manage stress better as adults.

As a parent of two, Janine has also been teaching these coping skills at home to her children. She understands from first-hand experience that it’s not always perfect. She strives for making progress, however small a step it is. Janine created Coping Skills for Kids as a place where professionals and parents could get resources to teach children how to deal with their emotions in healthy ways.

Positive Words about the Kids Workbook

"Wow! This book is a game changer. I read it first and gained so much insight. I’ve heard my kiddo discuss breathing techniques from school. This book has several. Every family should own this book. It’s brilliant. I ordered more books by this author after reading this one and her bio."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazon reviewer MBH, United States

"Great book for kids!" -- "I bought this book to help my 11 year old son come up with better coping skills. He had been quick to anger and beginning to do poorly at school for the last couple of years. This book really helped him find a couple of exercises that he can use when feeling anxious or stressed instead of just getting angry about it. One that he favors over all he uses to help calm his anxiety before he goes to sleep at night. Very happy I got this book!"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazon reviewer Karey, United States

"A Therapist's Best Resource" -- "The best therapy book for kids AND adults I have bought in years!! The breathing exercises alone are worth the cost of this book!"

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazon reviewer Lisa Delgadillo, United States

"The Coping Skills Workbook is an excellent resource for parents (and educators) who want to help the children in their lives learn important, timeless skills for self-soothing.  Filled with concrete suggestions and instructions, this workbook allows parents to teach their kids to cope with the stressors that they will inevitably encounter in their day to day lives.  This workbook also functions as a layperson's primer on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, helping parents teach kids how to reframe their cognitions and change their behaviors to feel more calm and in control."

"I absolutely LOVE the “Coping Skills for Kids Workbook” by Janine Halloran.  It’s an AMAZING resource of over 75 coping strategies for kids to help deal with stress, anxiety, and anger.  It’s organized wonderfully by four categories - calming coping skills, distracting coping skills, physical coping skills, and process coping skills - with an extremely helpful checklist handout to work on with kids.  With all of these strategies in one place it will definitely be my “go-to” book for a long time in my work as a child psychologist and play therapist."

"As I read this book my 15-year-old and I were under a tremendous amount of stress. Janine's book helped not just my teen – but me as well. We read together about the adolescent brain, which Janine writes so helpfully about in Coping Skills for Teens. We gained a new understanding of why stress happens, and how coping skills are crucial for helping people feel better in times of stress.

We've put several of Janine's coping skills into place! I watched my teenager use these coping skills in getting better, getting home, and stepping into this new normal. He is thriving because of Janine's wonderful book. As an educator and parent, I see this book as crucial for not just every teen – but every teen's family. Required reading that you will enjoy, learn from, and feel better every time you return to it for another coping skill."
