CALM AND CONNECTED - EPISODE 10
Progressive Muscle Relaxation 101
Progressive Muscle Relaxation is one of my favorite strategies to use with kids and teens in therapy. I have vivid memories of the first time I ever did a Progressive Muscle Relaxation in Psych 101 classes in college, and I felt so wonderful afterwards, I knew I would use this intervention with my clients.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a way of contracting and relaxing muscles in your body, with the goal of leaving your entire body relaxed. You start at the top of your body, and go through different muscle groups, tensing and relaxing them in turn.
There are tons of scripts out there that you can read out loud to your child or client to help them focus on different sections of their body. I wrote one for the Coping Skills for Kids Workbook and made a video to go along with it.
